A new Star Wars trilogy led by Simon Kinberg is reportedly in the works, and while these movies aren’t confirmed to be Episodes 10-12, they’re a good reminder that those episodes are only a matter of time. Although Star Wars movies and TV shows have expanded considerably throughout the decades, the franchise was built upon its episodic structure, first with Episodes 4-6 in the original Star Wars trilogy and then with Episodes 1-3 in the prequels. The Star Wars sequel trilogy continued this pattern, although it also theoretically ended it.
The Skywalker Saga was meant to end with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which presumably means Star Wars’ iconic ‘episodes’ have come to an end, even as the franchise continues to make movies and TV shows. This addition to Star Wars’ upcoming movies has called that into question, however. Some (unconfirmed) reports have already suggested that this new trilogy will comprise Episodes 10-12, but whether or not they do, Star Wars Episodes 10-12 seem all but inevitable.
The Star Wars “Episodes” Are Too Big To Pass On
The Episodes Have Been Where Star Wars Shines
While it’s been exciting to see the direction Star Wars has taken as the franchise steers away from the Skywalker family tree, there is something special about the Star Wars episodes that simply can’t be abandoned. There have been a number of Star Wars projects outside the Skywalker Saga that have proven incredibly popular, among them Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Bad Batch, to name just a few. Even so, it’s difficult to match the excitement that comes with a new installment of Star Wars episodes.

Even with many still arguing that the sequels are among Star Wars’ worst movies, there was significant fanfare around the return of the Skywalker Saga to the big screen, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ box office numbers are proof enough of that. The Force Awakens grossed more than $2 billion worldwide—a staggering number even for Star Wars. It’s unlikely even with the franchise’s dedication to telling new stories that Star Wars won’t capitalize on this once again in the future.

Daisy Ridley’s Rey Deserves To Be The Center Of A New Star Wars Trilogy
If The Skywalker Saga Is Continuing, It Should Be With Rey Skywalker
Star Wars has yet to confirm whether this new trilogy will be Episodes 10-12 in the Skywalker Saga, but Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie, rumored to be titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order , is confirmed to be in the works. Although details about New Jedi Order remain limited, it doesn’t currently seem as though there is any connection between Kinberg’s trilogy and New Jedi Order. In fact, this trilogy will evidently tell all-new stories, which heavily hints Rey would not have a leading role in the movies, if she had any role at all.
This would be a massive insult to Rey Skywalker and to Daisy Ridley.
Assuming this new trilogy is indeed Episodes 10-12 and the projects are as separate as they seem, this would be a massive insult to Rey Skywalker and to Daisy Ridley. Yes, the sequel trilogy and Rey’s role in it remain controversial in the Star Wars fanbase, but that is indicative of larger complaints since Disney purchased Star Wars. Rey herself has become beloved by many, which is clear in the number of cosplays and the amount of Star Wars fan art dedicated to Rey (and the enduring popularity of the ‘Reylo’ relationship).

Star Wars’ New Trilogy Being Episodes 10-12 & Continuing The Skywalker Saga Would Be A Huge Insult To Rey & Daisy Ridley
A brand-new Star Wars trilogy is evidently in the works, but if these movies are intended to be episodes 10-12, it would be a major disrespect to Rey.
Rey has also earned a trilogy focused on her story. Although the treatment of the original trilogy heroes was one of the biggest complaints about the sequels, Episodes 7-9 were built primarily on nostalgia for the original trilogy. In fact, one of the biggest issues with the Star Wars sequel movies was the at times heavy-handed connection to the original trilogy movies, particularly A New Hope. A trilogy based on Rey would provide something truly new and allow her story to be the focal point. However, her upcoming movie may mean such a trilogy is never coming for Rey.
When Will Lucasfilm Run With Star Wars Episodes 10-12?
Star Wars’ Announcement Of Episodes 10-12 Will Be Perfectly Timed
Even without Rey leading the trilogy, this would also be the ideal time for Star Wars to announce that Episodes 10-12 are coming and capitalize on the excitement that such an announcement would bring. Unfortunately, Star Wars has been struggling of late to combat backlash, controversy, and division within the fanbase. The Acolyte’s cancelation was symptomatic of how divided things have become. Announcing the continuation of the Skywalker Saga wouldn’t immediately heal those rifts, but it would mean reinvigorating the franchise at a time when it sorely needs it.
This is true whether Simon Kinberg’s trilogy is confirmed to be Episodes 10-12 or not, although that seems to be the most likely option at present for Star Wars to reveal new installments in the Skywalker Saga are coming. It’s possible that reports have simply misspoken when referring to this trilogy as Episodes 10-12 or, perhaps, Star Wars really will bring back its episodic structure in Kinberg’s upcoming trilogy. Either way, it’s really only a matter of time before Star Wars announces Episodes 10-12 in the Skywalker Saga.
