With the Moana 2 release, Dwayne Johnson has landed two movies in the domestic box office Top 5 at the same time. The new movie, which is a sequel to the 2016 Disney animated hit, opened the day before U.S. Thanksgiving. It came just one and a half weeks after the premiere of the holiday action-comedy Red One, in which Johnson played North Pole security chief Callum Drift, who must work with hacker Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans) to save Christmas after Santa Claus (J. K. Simmons) is kidnapped.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Moana 2 is projected to claim the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office during its debut weekend with a 3-day gross of $140 million and a 5-day gross between $215 and $220 million. That 3-day total provides Johnson with his second-best opening weekend ever, behind Furious 7‘s $147.1 million debut.
Additionally, Red One is sliding onto the chart at No. 4 with a projected 3-day total of $13.2 million (representing a 0% drop from the previous weekend) and a 5-day gross of $19 million, affording him the rare opportunity of having two movies in the Top 5 simultaneously.
