Every year for the past 15 years, a new photograph has entered the list of the 50 most expensive photographs ever sold at auction. Currently, the absolute record dates from 2022. The top is populated by recent creations, but also more than a century old.
“Le Violon d’Ingres” (1924), the famous nude figure of a woman with frills drawn on her back, is the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction.
The creation of Man Ray was sold at auction in May 2022 at Christie’s New York for a record $ 12.4 million, after an estimate of $ 5 million – $ 7 million.
The picture with Kiki de Montparnasse is considered an original photographic copy, so very valuable in the opinion of experts.
Previously, Man Ray’s most expensive photograph was “Noire et Blanche” (1926), sold in 2017 for $3 million at Christie’s Paris.
