Recent AP History:
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has moved to clarify a slight remark he made about wanting to do damage after his side’s Champions League game.
Guardiola came to speak to the media after Draw 3-3 with Feyenoord on Tuesday – during which City conceded three goals after the 75th minute to extend the lead – with a cut on his nose and also some scratches on the top of his head.
Asked about these marks, Guardiola said: “Yes, my finger. Here,” while performing a quick downward movement along the nose. “My nail.”
Then he added with a smile, “I want to hurt you.”
Wednesday, a post from Guardiola’s account on the social platform X made reference to this remark, with the Spanish coach saying that he was “caught off guard” by the question and that his “answer was in no way intended to highlight the very serious problem of self-harm”.
“We know that many people struggle with mental health issues every day,” continued the post from Guardiola, who recommended that anyone seeking help contact the Samaritans.
Guardiola is coming off the worst spell of his managerial career, with City – winners of the last four Premier League titles – losing five consecutive games in all competitions for the first time before the implosion against Feyenoord.
No team in the Champions League had ever lost a three-goal lead until the 75th minute and not won the game, statistics provider Opta said.
It could get worse for City, who were humiliated in a 4-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Saturday.
Next up is a trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday. A loss would leave City 11 points behind Liverpool after just 13 games and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan admitted it was a game the struggling champions cannot afford to lose.
“To stay in the title race, probably yes, because 11 points would be a big gap,” Gundogan said. “Anfield is always tough, no matter the situation. We have struggled in recent years going there and we know Liverpool are a big team full of confidence now.
“It will be as hard as possible, but this sums up the situation now. It seems that we have to go through this season as hard as possible.”
