WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for From season 3, episode 10!From’s season 3 finale sees Jade bring back his insulting nickname for Jim, “Teacup,” which serves as a reminder of Jade’s impressive character development. When Jade first arrived in Fromville, he wasn’t well-liked by the other From characters. Jade was arrogant and conceited because he was an extremely wealthy, successful software developer, and had little regard for those around him while also frequently belittling them. However, the tragedies that he experienced and visions that plagued him led to Jade becoming one of Fromville’s most genuine and insightful residents.
Of course, there are echoes of the old Jade that prove he hasn’t completely shed his sarcasm and abrasive personality, especially when he’s around Jim. Though Jade and Jim’s interactions gradually decreased throughout the series, it was clear that the two still struggled to get along after disagreeing so heavily in season 1. As they reluctantly work together to discover what the bottle tree’s numbers mean in From season 3’s ending, Jade and Jim’s dynamic is revived more thoroughly, which includes bringing back Jade calling Jim “Teacup.”
Jim’s “Teacup” Nickname Is A Sarcastic Reference To His Former Amusement Park Engineer Profession
Jade Belittled Jim’s Engineering Career Compared To His Own In From Season 1
When Jade, Jim, and Tabitha try to assess what From‘s bottle tree numbers could mean, Jim suggests that they could be music notes, as they would correspond to the 12 notes on a scale. In a rare moment when Jade actually compliments Jim, he replies, “Teacup, you are a f*ing genius. I love you.” It’s been a while since Jade has used that name for Jim, but he often called him “Teacup” throughout From season 1 until Julie scolded him and made Jade stop.
Jade started playfully teasing Jim by calling him “Teacup” from then on, pompously implying that his own engineering career was superior.
Of course, the nickname doesn’t have kind origins, being based on Jade comparing his engineering profession to Jim’s. While Jade and Jim were arguing in season 1, Jade arrogantly belittled Jim by stating that, while he built a multi-million-dollar software engineering company, Jim, an amusement park engineer, did “safety tests on the teacup ride.” Jade started playfully teasing Jim by calling him “Teacup” from then on, pompously implying that his own engineering career was superior.
Why From’s Season 3 Finale Brings Back Jade Calling Jim “Teacup” After 2 Seasons
Jade Calling Jim Teacup Provides A Bookend For Their Connected Stories
Jade hasn’t called Jim “Teacup” since From season 1, so it was unexpected for him to bring back the nickname. However, that callback is important in highlighting how different Jade is in season 3 from the guy who made fun of Jim’s profession back in season 1. He’s less arrogant, and more focused on simply trying to get out of Fromville and solve the mysteries that continue to haunt him. But, that arrogance is still in there somewhere, as Jade has to balance his compliment of calling Jim a “genius” by still getting in a jab with the “Teacup” insult.
