Warning! SPOILERS about Fire Country season 3, episode 7 ahead.
Manny’s reaction to Bode’s graduation from the Cal Fire program proves his approach in Fire Country season 3 risks undermining his past and pushing him closer to failure. Fire Country season 1 presented Manny as the poster boy for what can be achieved as a former inmate, as he dedicated his life to give inmates a second chance by captaining them at Three Rock. Manny’s influence was incommensurably important for Bode, inspiring him and being close to him as his family clashed on how they wanted to reconnect with him, and showing what Bode’s future could consist of after prison.

Bode’s Fire Country Season 3’s Biggest Challenge Sets Up His Best Future (Without Gabriela)
Bode finally claims his Leone legacy in Fire Country season 3, episode 2, but another trainee’s ruthlessness proved they can be his biggest challenge.
While Fire Country season 1 had Manny face problems, nothing was as big as losing the captaincy of Three Rock. Beginning Fire Country season 2 as yet another firefighter at Station 42 highlighted how Manny didn’t belong there, even if there he could work closely with both Vince and Sharon. Punching Luke Leone after learning about his campaign to shut down Three Rock led Manny to his worst downfall in Fire Country season 3, which at least let him feel more at home because he was at Three Rock again, but it’s his attitude that risks Manny never truly progressing.
Manny’s Behavior In Fire Country Season 3 Proves He Refuses To Accept His Reality
Manny’s Bad Mood At Bode’s Graduation Shows Him At Odds With His Situation
Receiving the news he would have served his sentence at Three Rock made Manny surprisingly happy, because it meant he would have been amongst those he considered his brothers. While his happiness about being part of Three Rock persisted, Manny’s reaction to Eve and the inmates’ idea to cook Three Rock grub for Bode’s graduation party showed resistance to accept Bode’s time at Three Rock should have been the focus. Manny profoundly opposed reminding Bode about his time at Three Rock, instead believing Bode should focus on his present and future, without remembering his lowest moment as an inmate firefighter.
Manny admitted his shortcomings as Three Rock’s captain, being acutely aware of them, but that changed completely in
Fire Country
season 3.
Manny’s approach was different when he was captain at Three Rock. When he led his inmate firefighters by example, Manny never played down how he was part of the group, instead inspiring them to look for a future in firefighting well after exiting Three Rock. Manny admitted his shortcomings as Three Rock’s captain, being acutely aware of them, but that changed completely in Fire Country season 3. Manny was detached from his loved ones once returning to Three Rock in Fire Country season 3, and he opposed his reality, wanting to focus on anything but him returning to fire camp.
Bode Accepts His Situation Leading To His Success In Fire Country Season 3
Bode Now Cherishes His Entire Path That Brought Him To Cal Fire
Contrarily, Bode and Audrey made their past as inmates and then inmate firefighters a big part of their celebration after finally graduating as Cal Fire firefighters. Their training in Fire Country season 3, episode 3 already showed how much they appreciated having the chance to join Cal Fire, but actually reaching the end of their training program reminded them how uncommon it was for someone with their history to successfully finish the training to become Cal Fire firefighters. This called for Bode and Audrey to single out their achievement in private, cherishing the struggles that brought them there.
Bode’s situation after Fire Country season 2’s ending had the same markings as Manny’s as he refused to stop and reflect on what his path had been, instead focusing on his future and his unmovable resolution to become a Cal Fire firefighter in Fire Country season 3. Bode’s certainty he wanted to make firefighting his future now showed how focused he was on making his dream job a reality, but Bode also never reneged on his past. Instead, Bode acknowledged all parts of his past as important to make him the person he was now, capable of joining Cal Fire.
Manny’s Stubbornness Can Result In His Downfall
Manny Skirts His Accountability & Risks Making His Situation Even Worse
Throughout Fire Country, Manny often refused to see the trouble he was in, only being able to ask for help to select characters. His inability to see why Eve’s suggestions like having Gabriela among his approved visitors were important showed how detached Manny was from the reality he was living in. Despite being proud of having become inmate firefighter first and then a Cal Fire one, Manny was taken aback by having to redo the same process if he wanted to be where he was in Fire Country season 1.
Manny struggled to accept help from Gabriela in
Fire Country
season 1 when he had restarted gambling, but at least he asked Vince for help, making him one of the few Manny could rely on.
This makes it imperative for Manny to accept the help those close to him are offering in Fire Country season 3, or he risks ending up as alone as Gabriela. Despite asking her to rely on those close to her instead of isolating, Manny is guilty of doing the same thing, not accepting he has to do everything all over again if he wants to return to his position as Cal Fire firefighter first and captain later. Hopefully, Manny can understand sooner rather than later than his stubbornness only hinders him in Fire Country season 3.
