Călin Georgescu, the candidate of the radical right who came in first position in the second round of the presidential election, launched a virulent attack on the EU, NATO and the Constitutional Court of Romania, which he describes as ” mafia”. day after canceling the presidential election.
Calin Georgescu said in an interview for Sky News that he was the victim of a “coup d’état” that exposed the “corrupt regime” of Romania.
He said that the cancellation of the elections by the CCR, which motivated the decision due to foreign interference, was “a dictatorship” designed to protect “the oligarchic system that wants to protect what it stole”.
“The Constitutional Court of Romania … is a mafia court of Romania,” he declared, adding: “because nine people decide for 19 million people, this is not acceptable.”
“This is a coup. Executed by the state that is still in power in Romania.”
NATO and EU pressure on the CCR to cancel the elections
Georgescu claims that the CCR was pressured to cancel the elections by a group of European Union and NATO countries who intend to undermine democracy because of their desire to maintain the war in Ukraine.
“They need the war and they want to protect their wages,” he said. “NATO has gone from defense to offensive and we cannot accept this. I am not pushing to go to war because it is not in my interest. But they need war.”
Georgescu claims that the absentee ballots, before the annulment of the election, suggested that he would have won more than 80% of the votes, a claim that cannot be verified.
I still believe that the second round should take place, arguing that “you can’t just call it two days before it happens.”
He said that if he won the presidency, he planned to hold a peace conference in Bucharest to which he would invite leaders such as Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Vladimir Putin and Sir Keir Starmer.
We remind you that the CCR unanimously decided on Friday to cancel the entire electoral process for the election of the President of Romania, and a new date and a new electoral calendar will be established to take the necessary actions.
In justifying its decision to cancel the presidential election, published on Friday evening, the Constitutional Court shows that the freedom of voters to form an opinion presupposes the right to obtain correct information about the candidates, so that the interference of state or non-state entities in the implementation of electoral propaganda or disinformation campaigns must be excluded.
We also remember that after the cancellation of the elections Călin Georgescu made the BEC and the AEP to “respect democracy” and let “voting continue”because the decision of the CCR to cancel the presidential election, although it is mandatory, “there is no sanction for its non-implementation”.
