This Holiday Special Blends Music With Comedy
“buy me presents” by Sabrina Carpenter – Sabrina Carpenter opens A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter with “buy me presents” from her album Fruitcake. She is shown singing on an elevated stage in a long red gown. It is after this song that she introduces herself to the viewers and thanks them for tuning in to her holiday special (joking about how viewers could have instead spent time with family or helped those in need instead).
“It’s The Most Nonsense Time of the Year” by Sabrina Carpenter – Following her introduction, Carpenter has an outfit change, appearing in a red dress with white fringe that is much more reminiscent of Santa Claus. She then breaks into a parody version of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” in which she describes all that is to follow in the Netflix special. It is also at this point that she refers to A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter as a “musical comedy holiday special.”
“This Christmas (Hang All the Mistletoe)” by Tyla and Sabrina Carpenter – The first celebrity guest in A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter is Tyla, who sings “This Christmas” with Carpenter. The two then begin dancing, and myriad singers, dancers, and musicians join in with them. This song also features another outfit change from Carpenter, who appears in a shimmery white outfit with long fringes.
“santa doesn’t know you like i do” by Sabrina Carpenter – The next song in the special sees Carpenter in a solo performance once again. Now in a fluffy white robe and standing on a circular stage, Carpenter sings “santa doesn’t know you like i do” from her album Fruitcake. This song also includes multiple cuts to the live studio audience dancing and singing along. This song hilariously ends with a clip of Santa Claus looking in a mirror and singing “I’m working late because I’m Santa” to the tune of Carpenter’s song “Espresso.”
“Santa Baby” by Shania Twain and Sabrina Carpenter – After a comedy skit in which Carpenter is dating Santa Claus but doesn’t know it (and hilariously insists her ‘boyfriend Nick’ isn’t Santa), Shania Twain and Carpenter sing “Santa Baby” together. This marks the second celebrity guest in A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter. Carpenter and Twain exit the stage hand in hand, and the special transitions to a new scene with another original song.
“What Do I Get My Brother-in-Law” by Sabrina Carpenter – Following her performance with Shania Twain, Carpenter breaks into a very funny, heavily auto-tuned original song. In it, Carpenter sings about how much she loves giving gifts, but she quickly becomes distressed, realizing she has nothing to give her brother-in-law, who she knows very little about despite them meeting ten years ago. The brother-in-law also chimes in with unhelpful information, such as that he likes sports, and the sister reveals that even she doesn’t know what he does for work.
“I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” by Kali Uchis and Sabrina Carpenter – After the brother-in-law song/skit, Carpenter sings “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” with guest Kali Uchis while sitting on the floor in front of a fire. This is a bit of a tonal shift in the holiday special, as there’s little dialogue, and the pace of the song is much slower. However, A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter quickly picks up its pace yet again, with a brand-new skit in which a ‘ghoster’ is visited by the past, present, and future, in the style of A Christmas Carol after this song.
“Last Christmas” by Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter – Carpenter is visited by another celebrity guest at this point in the Netflix special, this time Chappell Roan. Together, Carpenter and Roan sing a rendition of “Last Christmas,” curiously surrounded by a set showing a trashed house, as though someone has thrown a party. The two end up laughing and kneeling on the floor next to one another, which seemed to reveal a genuine warmth between the two singers.
“cindy lou who” by Sabrina Carpenter – Carpenter slows things down once again by performing “cindy lou who” at the piano. This song is also done entirely in black-and-white, and Carpenter dons a purple gown. Adding to the effect of the slower song and the black-and-white visuals, the long train of the dress flows behind Carpenter as she sings and plays. Carpenter also pretends to end the special with that song, but she quickly smiles and asks, “You didn’t think I was gonna leave you crying on Christmas, did you?”
“A Nonsense Christmas” by Sabrina Carpenter – After pretending she was ending the show, Carpenter transitions from the purple gown into a red bodysuit and black knee-high boots. She then begins singing “A Nonsense Christmas,” the special’s titular song, from her album Fruitcake. As this is the big finale, she is joined by dancers and backup singers, and she ascends a set of stairs with fake snow falling all around her. As she finishes the song, she thanks everyone for watching, and the special concludes with outtakes.
