President Klaus Iohannis announced on Saturday that he agreed with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, that “we need to strengthen the security of social networks”, after the CCR canceled the presidential election citing the interference of state or non-state entities in the implementation of electoral propaganda or disinformation campaigns.
“After the latest developments in Romania, I had an in-depth telephone discussion with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. We agreed that we need to strengthen the security of social networks, after the elections in the our country,” said the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.
We remind you that the CCR unanimously decided on Friday to cancel the entire electoral process for the election of the President of Romania, and a new date and a new electoral calendar will be established to take the necessary actions.
In justifying its decision to cancel the presidential election, published on Friday evening, the Constitutional Court shows that the freedom of voters to form an opinion presupposes the right to obtain correct information about the candidates, so that the interference of state or non-state entities in the implementation of electoral propaganda or disinformation campaigns must be excluded.
DIICOT announcedthat on the basis of documents declassified by the Supreme Council of Defense of the Country regarding the campaign of Călin Georgescu, a criminal case was opened for the crimes of illegal operations with computer devices or programs, criminal attempt to disturb the operation of computer systems and attempted crime of illegal access to a computer system.
The SRI reports speak of an operation prepared in advance, in favor of Călin Georgescu and which has the “mode of operation of a state actor”. For example, TikTok accounts were created in 2016, and Telegram accounts in 2022, and they were all mobilized in the current campaign.
