Get to the end of today’s Connections puzzle fast like a sprinting greyhound when you use these tips and tricks, but without them, you will likely be slowed down by some of the later categories. In this case, one of the categories is easier than it looks, and one of them is the opposite. That makes it a little hard to put everything together, and the deceptive appearance makes it worse than it would have been.
If you want to put the expanded vocabulary Connections has given you to use, you can do so by playing the NYT’s Spelling Bee puzzle. This puzzle has a combination of cute aesthetics and challenging gameplay, making it a great puzzle to play when you want something lighthearted to test your brain. In it, you will have to use your knowledge of the dictionary to create as many words as possible from the honeycomb-encrusted letters.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
DECEMBER 08 #546
If you need some hints to help you with today’s puzzle, you are in the right place. There are tons of possibilities with every Connections puzzle, made worse when there are no clear lines in between the categories. Even the yellow category did not feel quite as easy as it usually does today. So, to help you out with this one, here is a clue for every category:
- One category is about something you do when you are angry
- One category is about how to get as much as you can of something into something else
- One category is about four things that all share a common factor in their names
- One category is about different kinds of the same thing, but the words used are not spelled the way they normally are

BELT |
BLOW |
SLUG |
SOCK |
I got this category second today and I think it was mainly due to the word BELT. I don’t think I have ever heard it in reference to a “punch” specifically although I know what it can mean in reference to discipline. I feel like those two actions are not really the same thing, since a punch is a very specific movement with your arm, and a BELT means that an object has to be included. The other three words do make sense, although I did try to pair SLUG with CATERPILLAR once or twice before the end.

SANDWICH |
SHOEHORN |
SQUEEZE |
WEDGE |
I got this one first because I saw WEDGE and SQUEEZE and went with it. Finding the last two words was a little difficult, but not to the extent that I could not figure it out. SHOEHORN and SANDWICH both make sense here, and there were no other words that have the same “cram” idea. WRAP is likely the word that is meant to trick you into putting it with SANDWICH and WEDGE, but I didn’t really think too hard about that one, at least in this category.

This is where things began to fall apart for me when I was making my way through this puzzle. So many times I have made the “obvious” guess of just putting all the animals together just to be very disappointed, but today I could have done that, and I would have actually gotten it right! I was trying to put all of the “racing” themed words together. Sports are my weakness, as it was yesterday and many days before, but this time my little knowledge of sports actually made things worse than if I knew nothing at all.

This one was interesting, because, as I was trying to figure out the rest of the categories, I did resignedly think, “If only it was spelled Indie,” but then I also didn’t know what I would do with it at that point either. It is hilarious thinking back on it though. METTLE also annoys me, and I think it’s because in my head the double “TT” doesn’t sound anything like a single “T,” but that likely has no basis in reality because I tend to pronounce things weird. A fact that probably doesn’t help me win at Connections.
