Deadpool is one of the most iconic Marvel Comics characters to date, and while that has a lot to do with the popularity of his MCU franchise, Wade Wilson has been one of my favorite characters since his debut – and I’m certainly not alone there. So it should come as no surprise that Deadpool has seen a reboot or two throughout his Marvel Comics career, including one in particular that I’ve always found incredibly interesting. And it’s time that version of the Merc with a Mouth makes a comeback (sort of).
Marvel Comics’ original Ultimate Universe of Earth-1610 introduced an all-new Deadpool in Ultimate Spider-Man #91-94 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. This Deadpool wasn’t like the classic mutate fans know and love from Earth-616, but a cybernetically enhanced member of the Reavers who was driven by one thing and one thing only: hating mutants. “Wadey” Wilson subjected himself to countless surgeries, making himself a technologically advanced mutant-killing machine. This process left Deadpool horribly scarred, more so than his Earth-616 counterpart (if you can believe it).
The Ultimate Universe Deadpool wasn’t a victim of Weapon X, he didn’t have a heart of gold, and he certainly wasn’t out of his mind (at least, not in a comically wacky way). This Deadpool was focused, committed, and filled with unyielding hatred of mutants. Ultimate Deadpool even managed to survive his four-issue story arc, leaving the door wide open for him to return. However, he was unceremoniously killed by Earth-616’s Deadpool in Deadpool Kills Deadpool #4, bringing his career to a close. But now, I think it’s time Marvel brings Ultimate Deadpool back – just, not in the classic sense.
Marvel’s New Ultimate Universe Needs to Introduce Another Deadpool ‘Reboot’
New Variants of Classic Marvel Characters are Slowly Being Introduced in Earth-6160
The cool thing about the original Ultimate Universe’s Deadpool was that he was so different from his Earth-616 counterpart, and his differences were all interesting. He was like a dark reflection of the original Deadpool, as his disfigurement was a product of his own desire to enhance himself for the sole purpose of killing innocent mutants as opposed to being the tragic result of experimentation that he didn’t fully understand.
It was also refreshing to see a version of Deadpool that took himself seriously while still having a dark sense of humor that shone through the atrocities he was committing. The original Deadpool is famous for his quick wit and annoying presence, but that shtick can get real old, real quick. Ultimate Deadpool didn’t goof around, nor was he insufferably serious. He was a nice mix that was perfect for a fresh take on the character, and the same is true of his origin story and overall purpose in the Ultimate Universe.
I’m not saying Marvel Comics should resurrect the original Ultimate Deadpool (though I’m not saying it shouldn’t, either). I just think that an updated Deadpool as interesting as the original Ultimate Deadpool should make his way into Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe of Earth-6160. This fresh continuity is slowly introducing variants of iconic Marvel characters, and there’s almost no one as popular as Deadpool. It’s only a matter of time before there’s a new Ultimate Deadpool in Marvel Comics, and the publisher should take another look at Wadey Wilson for guidance.
Marvel Comics Has the Chance to Go Completely Off-the-Wall with Its New Ultimate Deadpool
Deadpool has God-Tier Power the Maker Could Want to Weaponize (Not His Healing Factor)
The first Ultimate Deadpool was cool because he was like a dark reflection of Wade Wilson with a twisted version of his classic backstory and a unique spin on the source of his powers. But the new Ultimate Deadpool could be something far greater – and far more dangerous.
As we all know, the Maker created the new Ultimate Universe, meaning practically every hero/villain who exists only exists because he allowed it, as they all serve a specific purpose that ultimately only benefits him. So, how cool would it be if the Maker deliberately created Deadpool? Not because he wanted to use him as a weapon, but because the Maker wanted to siphon Deadpool’s god-tier power: the ability to break the fourth wall.
Maybe the Maker is aware that Deadpool has the power to breach the veil between the comic book world and our world, and he wants that power for himself. Remember, Deadpool once killed the entire Marvel Universe because he couldn’t handle the fact that he was just a comic book character before traveling to our world and killing Marvel Comics’ writers to end the suffering once and for all. If the Maker had that power, he could take over any universe he wanted by simply manipulating Marvel Comics as a whole, rewriting continuity to make him the ultimate god.

Deadpool officially adopts an underrated MCU character into his lore, which could help shape the future of Deadpool’s Marvel Comics & MCU franchise.
Focusing solely on Deadpool’s ability to break the fourth wall, and the Maker’s desire to control that power, would be absolutely insane to see in the new Ultimate Universe, and would certainly be an interesting take on Deadpool. Obviously, that’s a pretty off-the-wall idea, so I’m not holding my breath. But, as long as the new Ultimate Universe does something to make Deadpool different while still keeping him just as interesting as his classic counterpart (just like the original Ultimate Universe version), I’ll be happy.
Deadpool
The merc with the mouth first appeared in an issue of New Mutants in 1990, and since then has gone on to get his own series and a massive cult following. With his incredible powers of healing and regeneration, Deadpool was initially depicted as an X-Men villain but went on to become an anti-hero. After getting his own movie series starting in 2016, the third Deadpool movie finally brings the wisecracking, fourth-wall-breaking character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
