Expect Season 3 To Come Out Sooner Than You Think

Squid Game season 3 is confirmed, and it will not take long for it to premiere on Netflix. After three years of waiting, Squid Game season 2 is finally here. The second chapter of the story that took the world by storm in 2021 took quite a while to come out, which is not uncommon for big-budget K-dramas. Squid Game quickly became Netflix’s most-watched show of all time upon its release in December 2021, and it was easy to predict that the series was going to be renewed for a second season.

Although most of the Squid Game season 1 characters died, Squid Game 2 is a direct continuation of the first season and sees Gi-gun (Lee Jung-jae) returning to the competition as he tries to bring down the games once and for all. Given what happens in Squid Game season 2’s ending, it is no surprise that Squid Game season 3 is already confirmed and has a release date. Fortunately, viewers won’t have to wait long to see how it all ends.

Squid Game Season 3 Is In Post-Production And Comes Out In 2025

Squid Game’s Seasons 2 And 3 Were Produced Simultaneously

In August 2024, Netflix announced that, in addition to season 2, Squid Game was going to return for a third and final season. The streamer also revealed that Squid Game season 3 is going to come out in 2025, although no specific release date was given. While Squid Game had only been officially renewed for season 2 back in 2022, it can be assumed that the second and third seasons were filmed back-to-back. This is not an uncommon strategy for Netflix original K-dramas, with the same being done for Sweet Home.

The fact that Squid Game’s seasons 2 and 3 are coming out relatively close to each other helps explain why the show took so long to return after its first season. Streaming shows taking multiple years to release new seasons is nothing new, but knowing that Netflix was developing two seasons of Squid Game at the same time does make the three-year wait worth it. Squid Game season 3 coming out in 2025 also makes season 2’s major cliffhangers easier to digest considering that it won’t take long for them to be resolved.

Squid Game’s Seasons 2 & 3 Were Written As One Big Story

Hwang Dong-hyuk Wrote Seasons 2 And 3 At The Same Time

To Deadline, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that he wrote Squid Game’s seasons 2 and 3 as one big story. Hwang explained that he penned both seasons at the same time, and that they were in production of seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously as well. Given how successful Squid Game was in 2021, it makes sense that Netflix greenlight two additional seasons once Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed he had another story to tell. However, it has only now been confirmed that seasons 2 and 3 were actually in production at the same time.

This is virtually the same strategy Netflix used for Sweet Home, whose first season came out in 2020 and became the first Korean show to chart globally on the streaming platform. Netflix renewed Sweet Home for two seasons, and while season 2 took three years to arrive, the third and final season dropped six months later. Using Sweet Home as a parameter, it may take less than a year for Squid Game season 3 to come out.

Squid Game Season 3’s Release Date Explains Season 2’s Shorter Episode Count

Squid Game Season 2 Only Had 7 Episodes

Squid Game season 2 has seven episodes, two less than the first season. While it may be frustrating that Squid Game returned with only seven episodes after a three-year wait, the way seasons 2 and 3 were planned justifies it. Hwang pointed out that, while writing the script for season 2, he realized that episode 7 was a good turning point for the story and the right place to stop it before season 3. This is somewhat similar to Netflix’s recent strategy of splitting seasons into two or three parts, although not exactly the same thing.

Netflix has yet to reveal how many episodes Squid Game season 3 will have. Considering that seasons 2 and 3 were written and produced at the same time, it wouldn’t be surprising if Squid Game 3 had the same number of episodes as season 2. The difference is that this time, Squid Game’s next batch of episodes will not take as nearly as long to arrive as season 2 did. Even if Squid Game season 3 has a relatively short number of episodes, the pacing might work just fine given where season 2 left this off.
