A new project by Madrid design collective Capitalism ensures that no one will escape awkwardly placed table legs.
We’ve all been there – stuck on the corner of the table during family gatherings, trying to get comfortable in front of an awkwardly placed table leg. To obsess or not to obsess?
Well, designer collective capitalism has found a way to provide for everyone dinner table falls into discomfort. Meet The Uncomfortable: a 34-legged dining table with a leg for everyone.
“In almost all middle-class Spanish families, there’s always someone stuck with their foot,” the anonymous creatives behind the Capitalism project told Dezeen. “We decided to democratize discomfort with a table where everyone gets a leg.”
The 2.75-meter-long, 34-leg table was purpose-designed not for practicality, but for conceptual irony. Uncomfortable turns the usual notion of table design on its head, prioritizing concept over practicality.
“The concept challenges traditional design by not aiming to be useful or functional, but instead addresses this inequality in an ironic way,” the group told Dezeen.
The legs themselves are a mix of custom made and pre-existing designs, sourced from some of the most popular tables in Spain.
“Since our goal was to present a collection of one-piece tables, many of the legs were taken from tables that were bestsellers in Spain,” the creatives explained. “Others were adjusted to balance the composition and create contrast.”
The visual impact of the table is further enhanced by the different materials used. The chrome galvanized steel legs shine next to the copper and methacrylate, and are crowned with a solid oak panel, creating a striking contrast – also reflecting the chaos caused by mealtimes at the table.
“We wanted the table to be timeless – something that wasn’t tied to any particular style or era, yet somehow belonged to all of them,” said the collective.
The piece is currently on display in Madrid’s CUPRA City Garage. Capitalism, Anonymous creative collectivedescribes itself as a group dedicated to reflecting on and challenging the paradoxes of modern society.
