The MCU‘s Guardians of the Galaxy surpassed the Avengers’ power in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, proving James Gunn’s comments right. The Avengers’ first mission together in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers established the MCU as a cinematic universe, and it opened the door for riskier projects like James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. At the time, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t a team as famous as the X-Men or the Fantastic Four. However, Gunn’s Phase 2 movie turned the Guardians into an A-list superhero property, and it placed characters such as Star-Lord, Drax, and Rocket Raccoon on the same level of popularity as icons like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor.
The Guardians of the Galaxy were inherently different to the Avengers in their first two movies, as they faced cosmic threats like Ronan the Accuser and Ego the Living Planet far away from Earth. It’s only until Thanos begins his quest to gather the Infinity Stones by himself in Avengers: Infinity War that the Guardians and the Avengers crossed paths. Still, while the Guardians possessed more knowledge about Thanos, they weren’t nearly as strong as the Avengers’s ultra-powerful line-up, whose members included heroes like Thor, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Vision, and the Scarlet Witch.
What James Gunn Said About The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vs The Avengers
James Gunn Believes The Original Guardians Of The Galaxy Team Has A Unique Advantage Over The Avengers
In a June 2023 episode of Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, James Gunn confessed, “I always thought that the Guardians would beat the sh*t out of the Avengers, easily.” According to Gunn, the Guardians of the Galaxy’s high-tech, extraterrestrial weaponry gives them a significant advantage over the Avengers: “They’re (in) outer space. They have technology that … is, you know, pretty advanced. So it would be hard to beat them.” Indeed, the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy possessed advanced weapons like Peter Quill’s gravity mines and Yondu’s Yaka arrow before the Avengers developed nanotechnology and space travel.
Why The Guardians Of The Galaxy Are More Powerful Now Than The Avengers
The News Guardians Of The Galaxy Team Includes At Least Three MCU Powerhouses
Although the original Guardians of the Galaxy would have struggled to match the original Avengers’ power, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s new Guardians team definitely leaves Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the dust. The MCU’s new Guardians of the team consists of a towering Groot, Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon, Cosmo, and Kraglin, plus Adam Warlock’s pet Blurp. Groot, Adam, and Phyla alone could defeat most of the MCU’s currently active Avengers, especially now that the Avengers remain disbanded and members such as Smart Hulk, White Vision, and Hawkeye have let their guard down.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 serves as the culmination of the titular team’s MCU journey, and here is everything about the film’s ending explained.
By the end of Phase 5, the MCU has yet to assemble a new Avengers team. If, or when, a villain as powerful as Loki and Thanos arrives, the Earth would be safer in the hands of a tight-knit team like the new Guardians of the Galaxy than individual heroes like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange. Whereas the Avengers lost their figureheads, Rocket Raccoon and Kraglin have gained valuable experience both in terms of combat skills and in terms of leadership.
