The head of Turkish diplomacy, Hakan Fidan, emphasized on Saturday, during a telephone conversation with his American counterpart Antony Blinken, that Syrian Kurdish fighters cannot be tolerated in Syria, reports AFP, cited by Agerpres.
“The PKK/SDF terrorist organization cannot be accepted in Syria,” the ministry spokesman said, referring to the powerful Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that control vast areas of the country’s northeast. .
Hakan Fidan explained to his man that it is “important to act in cooperation with the new Syrian administration to guarantee the stability of Syria and bring the transition period to an orderly end,” the spokesman said.
The new Syrian authorities in Damascus announced last Tuesday an agreement with “all armed groups” for their dissolution, specifying that they will be integrated into the Ministry of Defense.
However, this agreement does not apply to FDS. Turkey, very close to the new authorities in Damascus, considers the FDS an organization associated with its sworn enemy, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The SDF was at the forefront of the fight against the jihadist group of the Islamic State (IS), defeated in Syria in 2019.
The Kurds took advantage of the weakening of Bashar al-Assad’s central power during the 2011 war in Syria to proclaim an autonomous region in the north, drawing hostility from neighboring Turkey.
