Washington imposed sanctions on the largest Serbian oil and gas company due to Russian ownership. More details will be announced at a joint press conference on Saturday.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Friday that he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin after the US imposed sanctions on the main Serbian oil and gas company NIS due to its Russian ownership.
Vučić stated at the press conference that the USA is seeking the immediate removal of the Russian state company Gazprom from the corporation.
According to Vučić, “According to what we have seen, it is more about ‘removal’ than ‘reduction’. They won’t even allow the 49 percent option, they want a complete exit from NIS, maybe they could continue with their regular business, but we would have to immediately start with the plan to change the ownership structure.
On Saturday, it is planned that the details of the requests for sanctions will be explained at a joint press conference of Serbian and American representatives.
It is speculated that talks with Putin could focus on Serbia buying Moscow’s stake in the company.
Until now, Serbia has had the advantage of a competitive advantage thanks to the agreement with Russia.
The newly introduced sanctions will, however, deal a significant blow to the country’s economy.
