A serious accident happened this Saturday afternoon in Strasbourg. Two trams collided in the tunnel that leads to the stop that serves the station in the Alsatian capital. The report established by the prefecture is still provisional, but already shows a large number of injured.
“The first report shows 20 people in relative emergency,” said a spokesman for the prefecture, specifying that the circumstances of the accident have not been established.
The images transmitted on social networks show the violence of the shock, with many passengers lost. A video from a witness on social networks shows a chaotic scene with two seriously damaged trams in the tunnel, at the station. One of the trams appears to have derailed due to the impact.
A large security perimeter has been established in front of the station, where numerous ambulances have taken position, according to an AFP journalist on site. The fire and rescue services of the Bas-Rhin asked people to avoid the surrounding area to facilitate access for emergency services. For its part, Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS) interrupted traffic on several tram lines and stopped service at several nearby bus stations.
Strasbourg was the first large French city to put a tram network back into service, starting in 1994. Since then there had not been a major accident.
