The following contains spoilers for Better Man, now playing in theatersBetter Man includes a reference to Robbie Williams’ infamous comment about sleeping with four of the five Spice Girls, even if the claim has remained controversial and contested in real life. Better Man reimagines the life of pop star Robbie Williams. While faithful to real life in many ways, it tweaks his story in certain moments while also portraying Williams as a chimpanzee in a world of regular people. Better Man focuses on the highs and lows of his professional career and his personal life, with plenty of attention centered on his personal relationships.
This extends to his romantic life, although Better Man‘s ending doesn’t spend much time focused on Williams’ relationship with his eventual wife Ayda Field. Instead, the film’s biggest romance storyline is focused on his engagement to a fellow pop star, Nicole Appleton. The film also references some of the other casual flings Williams had over his career, even referencing one his most infamous romantic claims. Although the claim does have some real life connections, the beat was tweaked from real life and remains a questionable declaration from the pop star.
Robbie Williams Jokes That He Slept With Multiple Spice Girls In Better Man
Better Man Includes Robbie Williams’ Reference To The Spice Girls
A gag in Better Man references Robbie Williams’ joke that he slept with four of the five Spice Girls, something the singer actually claimed and later apologized for. Better Man charts the growth of Robbie Williams’ career to become one biggest pop stars in UK history. His popularity doesn’t reduce his chaotic tendencies, such as a habit of saying inappropriate things even when his genuine emotions are far more complex. This is perhaps best seen during the collapse of his romance with Nicole Appleton, which juxtaposes his personal relationship troubles with his more braggadocious public persona.

During a televised interview, Robbie notes that his sexual jokes aren’t the worst thing he’s ever said on camera. Robbie Williams’ Connection To The Spice Girls, Explained
Robbie Williams did in fact claim that he had slept with four of the Spice Girls, but not in the way the film presents it. Instead of making the claim during an interview, the real Williams joked that he had slept with four of the Spice Girls during a concert. As reported by NME, Williams made the reference right before singing the Take That song “Back For Good.” This resulted in some controversy for the singer, as Mel B openly denied sleeping with Williams. Williams would later apologize for his comment, admitting he hadn’t slept with Victoria Beckham either.
Williams has since explained that he only claimed that he slept with four of the Spice Girls because he thought it was a good joke — although he still says he’s slept with three of them.
Williams has joked that Victoria is the Spice Girl he really wanted to be with, but she has been romantically connected with David Beckham since before she met Williams. Mel B also specifically claimed that she and Williams are friends, noting that she wouldn’t want to risk that with a relationship. Robbie Williams Still Claims He Was Romantic With Three Spice Girls
Robbie Williams’ Joke Might Have Some Real Life Explanations
Even while apologizing for his previous comments, Williams has repeatedly suggested he did sleep with the other three members of the group. Given that Mel B and Victoria have openly denied having relations with Williams, this suggests that the Spice Girls Williams hooked up with were Geri Halliwell, Melanie C, and Emma Bunton. Given Williams’ history, there’s a chance this was just another joke. However, it has been confirmed that he had at least some relationship with some of the Spice Girls.

As reported by the Mirror, Mel C admitted to a romance with Williams that fell apart because of Wiliams’ drinking, suggesting they actually did have relations. Years later, he befriended Geri Halliwell, with many in the press beliving there may have been a romance between them. However, their relationship fell apart after a fight. Better Man doesn’t dive into these relationships, instead keeping the doomed romance between Williams and Appleton as the primary relationship subplot of the film. However, it does hint at the true scope of Better Man‘s messy romantic life.
