Hyper Light Breaker is entering Early Access soon on Steam, and players will want to know what to do and how to get in from the ground up on this game. It is described as an open-world roguelite, which is an exciting concept and one that feels fairly unique, although there have been other forays into the same style of game. Once players are able to get into the game, they will be able to find out just what that means for themselves.
In the same universe as Hyper Light Drifter, this game has many of the same settings and the sort of genre in terms of the world itself. It is not a direct sequel, and while it exists in the same world, it does not have much in common with its predecessor. It is a different style and a different type of gameplay, as the first game was more of a Zelda-like most similar to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Players will get to experience this for themselves once Early Access drops.
When Early Access Starts For Hyper Light Breaker
Full Release Date & Where To Find It
Early Access will become available as soon as January 14th, 2025 on Steam. There is not an exact time given, but that usually means it will become available close to midnight in a popular time zone. That is not a guarantee, but for those who want it as soon as possible, Steam will notify you if it is on your wishlist.

Hyper Light Breaker Preview: A Bold Combat Focus That Pays Off
Screen Rant went hands on with sci-fi roguelite Hyper Light Breaker at Summer Game Fest to learn more about the adventure game’s ever-changing world.
This, or following the game’s social media, is likely the best option for getting in as soon as possible. Early Access is becoming an increasingly common way to release games on Steam, so many are likely familiar with the process already.
How To Get Early Access
The Easiest Method To Get The Game Sent To You
Getting Early Access is easiest by going onto the Steam store and adding the game to the wishlist. However, this game will cost $29.99 for players who are hoping to get their hands on it early. The developers have stated that the price will increase after the full version 1 launch, so players should be aware that that is the case.
For their money, however, players are given a full version of the game, with functional online co-op and most of the features the next version will have. What is missing is extra cosmetics, some bosses and enemies, and some of the plot details. The main reason it is being released in Early Access is to get feedback from the community regarding the gameplay loop as well as other similar things.
What To Expect From Hyper Light Breaker’s EA Period
What Is Known & What Is Still Coming Down The Pipeline
The expectation is that Early Access will last about a year. While this is subject to change, it will likely depend on how much feedback they get and how quickly it can be incorporated. If it seems like something quite big needs fixing, it will obviously take a little longer. Notably, it is not yet known whether or not this game will be compatible with the Steam Deck for anyone who has one, but that may become known when Early Access launches as this information is usually included in day 1 announcements.
Hyper Light Breaker announced that the Early Access version would have at least two special bosses known as Crowns for players to face, and that the procedural generation of the world for each run is fully functional. It is a 3D system, allowing you to move around the world in a different way as compared to other roguelite games on Steam. The Crowns are separate fights that players can choose to face outside of the normal gameplay, and while it is just two right now, there are plans to add more as the Early Access continues on.
The game takes place in the Overgrowth with large-scale open biomes for players to explore. The traversal items, like the highly anticipated hoverboard, all seem to be fully functional, along with several weapons based on the Alpha gameplay footage. Players should not expect there to be a lot of customization options just yet, but you can still upgrade some of your skills and weapons. There are plans to add some new Breakers, gear, and skins as the Early Access continues. So while it may seem like there is not as much when it first starts, there will be soon after.

Hyper Light Drifter Ending Explained
Hyper Light Drifter is a beautiful 2D action title from 2016 that features no actual dialogue. Here’s the game’s ending (sort of) explained.
Additionally, the full map will change, not just the individual biomes, each time you reload it, which is interesting compared to other roguelite games. This means that you will likely never see the same world twice, and you will be able to explore it, retreat, and set out to explore a new one all over again. The more new content is added, the more this game will start to feel unique and varied. And, once more skins are added, players will start to feel like their characters are more unique compared to their friends.
It feels like the game is full steam ahead, with the game being at its core but just needs a little tweaking and some add-ins to make it flourish. Players will likely feel like they are playing the entire game, as even the online co-op should be fully functional. Players will be able to join up with two friends to explore the world together, giving them access to more options and ways to work through the world together.
While Early Access may last longer than originally intended, the developers plan on being quite involved with regular updates so that the fans do not get frustrated by silence. The Steam page states that they plan to give monthly updates, as well as stay in close communication with those playing during this time. While some developers may not follow through, this is the model the developer followed for the first game, Hyper Light Drifter, so there is a base established for the model in this case.
With any luck, players will spend the next year enjoying this game for all its worth in Early Access before heading into 2026 with version 1 on the horizon. For now, January 14th, 2025 is the date all players should be looking forward to as they set out to explore a whole new but slightly familiar world in Hyper Light Breaker.
