The German Social Democrats (SPD) on Saturday confirmed Chancellor Olaf Scholz as the main candidate of the party in the early parliamentary elections in February, reports the German news agency DPA, taken by Agerpres.
Only a few delegates rejected the majority, which overwhelmingly supported Scholz’s intention to return to the Chancellery in a vote held at the party conference in Berlin.
Scholz was nominated as a candidate for chancellor by the party leadership at the end of November after a stormy debate. The early vote was called after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s tripartite coalition, also in November.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has unanimously elected party co-chair Alice Weidel as its chancellor candidate in February’s parliamentary elections.
The motion was supported with loud applause by nearly 600 party delegates gathered at a conference in Riesa, in the eastern state of Saxony.
