The Matrix is one of the most popular and widely beloved sci-fi properties of all time, but even the most dedicated of fans can admit that it has its fair share of plot holes. As the sequels continued to expand this universe from the rich, self-contained narrative of the Wachowskis’ original film, the inconsistencies more and more evident. While none of these plot holes actually ruin The Matrix, there’s no denying that they’re hard to overcome. While there were only three Matrix movies for almost 20 years, the franchise returned with Resurrections and will now continue with the upcoming Matrix 5
Although The Matrix Resurrections was panned by critics, Matrix already had a complicated history with sequels. Neither Reloaded nor Revolutions were as well-received as the original film, with both sequels having way more problems than the first installments. By expanding the franchise’s lore, the Matrix sequels took some big risks, some of which resulted in plot holes and headscratchers. This includes Neo somehow having powers in the real world.
Neo’s Powers In The Real World Are The Perfect Premise For Matrix 5
The Matrix Revolutions May Have Perfectly Set Up The Matrix 5
A significant portion of The Matrix Revolutions takes place in the real world, with the machines getting ready to destroy Zion and restart the endless cycle explained by the Architect to Neo in The Matrix Reloaded. This time, however, Neo breaks the cycle by making a deal with the machines. Strangely enough, when Neo was in the real world, he was able to stop and control sentinels with his mind, all but confirming that the Chosen One somehow had actual powers outside of the Matrix.

The Matrix’s Controversial Sequels Were Never Bad, And The First Movie Proves It
The Matrix’s sequels never recaptured the magic of the original, but they’re far from bad. The original proves that its sequels had some bright spots.
The decision to bring Neo’s powers into the real world was confusing, but it’s something that could perfectly set the stage for The Matrix 5. The new film could spend more time in the real world and dive into how someone can have powers outside of the simulation, which could make for a very interesting story. Exploring a character’s powers outside of the Matrix would offer a completely different angle for an upcoming sequel, which would be necessary to prevent it from feeling too familiar.
Matrix 5 Doesn’t Need Neo To Explore The Chosen One’s Powers
There Are More Original Routes Matrix 5 Could Take
Although Neo seems like the obvious choice, it’s not strictly necessary for The Matrix 5 to follow his journey. His destination was firmly explained at the end of The Matrix Resurrections. He has teamed up with Trinity to rebuild the Matrix with a fairer, more moral blueprint. There aren’t too many questions about where Neo is going, so it may be a good idea for The Matrix 5 to follow another character altogether – and there are many characters from The Matrix who could carry their sequels.
The concept of “the one” has always been a major part of The Matrix, and while it’s seemingly been confirmed that Neo truly was the chosen one who broke the cycle and made a fabricated prophecy come true, that doesn’t mean The Matrix 5 has to be told from his perspective. It could be interesting to see the legacy of “the one” explored through the lens of another character who doesn’t share his powers.
Matrix 5 Can Show A Very Different Real World From The Original Movies
The Fifth Movie Neither Has To Take Place In Zion Nor In The “Old” Matrix
Ultimately, the main thing that The Matrix 5 has to do to succeed is make itself different enough from the existing sequels while giving returning audiences enough familiarity to not distance them too much. Taking place inside the real world, rather than the Matrix, seems like a smart way of doing this. There’s so much potential that hasn’t been explored in The Matrix’s real world, as the original trilogy only focused on the war against Zion. This is likely only a small part of The Matrix’s universe, and a potential sequel could easily steer clear of this storyline.
The next movie wouldn’t have to be a sequel – it could be a prequel, or even run tangentially to the original trilogy.
Not to mention, there’s also a huge timeline in The Matrix that hasn’t been fully explored. The next movie wouldn’t have to be a sequel – it could be a prequel, or even run tangentially to the original trilogy. The Matrix Resurrections’ total failure could prove to be a good thing for this franchise, as it will allow it to potentially focus on new characters instead. Neo’s story may be finished, but that doesn’t mean The Matrix has to be.
The Matrix 5: The latest installment in The Matrix series continues the saga of Neo and his allies as they navigate a complex dystopian world. Tasked with a monumental mission, they confront new challenges that question the fabric of reality and humanity’s place within it.
