The Married at First Sight season 18 experts have been hands-off this season while all the couples have been imploding, so what’s the reason for that? The three experts, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Pastor Cal Roberson, and Dr. Pia Holec have comprised the panel together since MAFS season 15 in San Diego. Dr. Pepper has been an expert since season 1, while Pastor Cal joined in season 4. Dr. Pia, the newest expert, joined in season 15 along with one and done season expert, DeVon Franklin.
Dr. Pepper and Pastor Cal have been appearing together in therapy sessions with the couples more frequently over the last few seasons while Dr. Pia has been counseling the couples solo. Dr. Pia has gotten the most screen time as an expert this season. Married at First Sight season 18 is quickly unraveling, as the majority of the couples are not connecting, and one even broke up on the heels of their one-month anniversary. Given the clear breakdown, it’s odd that the experts aren’t stepping in more to get the couples back on track.
Every MAFS Season 18 Couple Isn’t Getting The Expert Support They Need
Every Season 18 Couple Is Struggling
Married at First Sight season 18 couple David Trimble and Michelle Tomblin started their troubles as soon as they said I do. After David revealed that he was a smoker who lived in his parents’ basement, Michelle was turned off and overwhelmed, and she hasn’t been able to shake that. Their new marriage deteriorated on the honeymoon as their communication broke down, and the experts did not step in to deescalate the situation, leading to more problems between David and Michelle.
Karla Juarez’s passive-aggressiveness has been rampant as the experts have not done enough to curb her attitude that is pushing her husband, Juan Franco, away. What’s more, the experts are doing nothing to encourage the spark that’s missing for Juan, and he and Karla are growing further apart. The experts are also letting Camille Parsons rudely run rough shot over her husband Thomas’ style, as she’s avidly critiqued that he doesn’t have swag.
The experts are failing to address that Madison Myers is not attracted to her husband, Allen Slovick. Madison is going through the motions and playing the part, but it doesn’t look like she has any intention of getting to the next level with Allen, and the experts are missing that huge point. Ikechi Ojoré has been insulting his wife, Emem Obot, throughout the experience, and instead of protecting Emem, Dr. Pia made her apologize to Ikechi for being herself.
“I came into this just being who I am, and it was too much for you, and I’m hearing that now.”
Why Are The MAFS Experts Being Hands-Off?
Are They Letting Drama Play Out On Purpose?
The clear intention of the MAFS experts to be hand-off in season 18 has a purpose to it.
It seems like production may be intending to have more drama play out for higher entertainment value, but it’s at the expense of the couples.
The wayward pairs need the guidance promised to them in the experience. Without it, the matches are needlessly suffering due to the experts’ aloofness and removed help, and left to sort out their huge problems themselves.

Will The Experts Be More Involved In The Rest Of The Process?
The Scandals Will Get The Experts Involved
The Married at First Sight experts will have no choice but to be more involved in the second half of season 18, as two scandals will rock the show. A cheating scandal and a couples swap is looming, and, via @mafsfan, the experts will have opinions and need to be present to sort through the chaos. However, the experts’ late presence in the show will be too little too late.
A lot of care, attention, and counseling has been needed by the couples in the early part of the process. Now, since the matches have not received the professional help they needed, many of them have resentment towards their partner that will be hard to get over. The Married at First Sight experts are only seeing the couples once a week. The only other capacity they’ve helped in is by sending gift baskets with prompts, which is an embarrassingly not enough gesture.
Married At First Sight airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Lifetime.
