WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for Batman and Robin #17!Damian Wayne’s Robin has been undergoing some serious character growth, officially leaving his Bat-Brat days behind for a more mature evolution. For those who couldn’t stand his earlier antics, this transformation is a long-awaited relief. But for others, it’s a bittersweet farewell to the chaotic charm of the past. Love it or hate it, one question remains: What does this newfound growth mean for the future of the Boy Wonder?
This character growth opens up the possibility of an intriguing new role for Damian within the Bat-Family.
There’s no denying that Damian has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, especially under the creative team of Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Javier Fernández in their Batman and Robin run.
These two have pushed the Boy Wonder into the deep end of self-reflection, forcing him to question his role in fighting crime alongside Batman. But PKJ hasn’t just given Damian an identity crisis; in Batman and Robin #17, he’s also infused the character with newfound maturity and humility, helping him shed his infamous Bat-Brat reputation.

While Damian revealed his secret volunteering at a hospital in issue #16, it’s in issue #17 that fans finally get to see this new side of him play out on the comic pages. In a scene that quickly turns introspective, Damian is shown changing the sheets of a hospital bed when Dr. Bashar—a Wayne family friend—checks in on him, asking how he’s coping after witnessing an incident at a gala that left a young girl critically injured. Dr. Bashar then encourages Damian to seek out his father and share his struggles and emotions surrounding the event.
Damian, however, responds, “How am I supposed to tell him the son of Bruce Wayne is weak and afraid,” clearly referring to himself. The doctor is quick to counter Damian’s self-criticism, saying, “You are a rich man’s son who chooses to change sick patients’ bedsheets and clean up their spills, without reward.” This blunt yet compassionate observation from Dr. Bashar highlights just how far Damian has come. Once defined by entitlement, a superiority complex, and a complete lack of tact, Damian has humbled himself in ways that would have been unimaginable years ago.
The contrast between the Damian of then and the Damian of now is almost jarring—they feel like two entirely different characters. I still vividly remember the days when the youngest Wayne talked down to everyone he met, viewing them as inferior, and even had the audacity to treat the great Alfred Pennyworth as a mere servant. Yet now, Damian has gone from expecting others to serve him to willingly serving others. It’s an incredible arc of character growth, and while I appreciate how far he’s come, I can’t help but have mixed feelings about this transformation.

Damian’s Character Growth as Robin Is Awesome But Also Extremely Bittersweet

While I can respect and understand DC’s decision to let Damian grow both physically and mentally, I can’t help but miss the Damian of old. This might be a controversial opinion, but I loved Bat-Brat Damian. Sure, he had a lot of negative traits, but that was part of the fun for me. I also loved seeing a little boy whose confidence was ten times bigger than he was and who would stop at nothing to prove himself worthy of the Robin mantle. That’s why this self-doubt arc is hard for me as a reader who fell in love with the spitfire that was Damian Wayne.

What Is Robin’s Character Growth Building Up Towards?

As much as it pains me to see Damian’s loss of confidence, I’m eager to see where this character arc is heading. It could very well lead to the youngest Wayne stepping away from vigilantism altogether and following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Thomas Wayne, by pursuing a career in medicine. This would be a poetic turn for Damian—a character whose hands were once used to take lives now using them to save and heal. It also opens up the possibility of an intriguing new role for him within the Bat-Family: the family medic. With Alfred gone and Leslie Thompkins aging, the Bat-Family will eventually need a new go-to for medical care. Medic Robin, anyone?
