Kamala Khan has a new nemesis in Marvel Comics lore, and given the themes of Ms. Marvel season one, his new villain would fit perfectly as a villain for season two. Kamala’s cousin Bilal has joined the ani-mutant radical group known as the Truthseekers; now calling himself Truthseeker, he has made it his goal to expose Ms. Marvel’s identity – without knowing who is under the mask.
In NYX #7 – written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Enid Balan – Ms. Marvel spots her cousin Bilal snooping around NYX, and as security, she goes to investigate. Kamala finds her cousin on a Green Goblin-looking glider with explosives, “dollar store spider-slayers,” and scanners.
Truthseeker reveals that he is stalking Kamala because he believes in the truth, and Kamala hiding behind a mask puts her friends and family and actually putting them in more danger. The idea that Kamala’s family feels this way about what she does completely breaks her, even if Bilal doesn’t realize who he’s speaking to.

Kamala holds her secret so close to her heart that when she formed the Champions with Miles Morales and Sam Alexander, she refused to tell her secret identity to even her closest teammates. It has gotten to the point where Kamala has become more comfortable in her role as Ms. Marvel than when she’s just Kamala, and she has started to see Ms. Marvel as her true self, and Kamala Khan as her secret identity.

Kamala Khan Has Officially Outgrown Being Marvel’s Jr. Hero
While it’s tempting to think of Kamala as Marvel’s fresh-eyed face, she’s a tried and true hero who’s ready to do some mentoring of her own.
Even in this issue of NYX, Synch points out to Kamala that she’s the only one in NYX that is wearing a mask and hiding who she really is. Kamala stands up for herself, and says, “Ms. Marvel is who I am.” Every time Kamala goes out as Ms. Marvel, she is flashing her bright-colored suit to everyone who looks her way, and in her eyes, she is being as true to herself as possible, but not everyone sees it that way. After Truthseeker’s explanation, Kamala breaks down in tears, showing that it greatly rattled her.

Ms. Marvel: Kamala Khan’s MCU Powers Make Their Comic Debut
Ms. Marvel finally displays the mutant powers from her Disney+ series in a surprisingly elegant way that bridges comic and MCU continuites.
In the Marvel Universe, many mutants cannot hide, because of their physical mutations. If Kamala is really going to take the next step in her character development, she needs to leave her Inhuman/Avengers self behind, and embrace the part of herself that is mutant/X-Men. As Kamala becomes more entwined with X-Men story lines, via her inclusion in NYX, she needs to take a step forward with her identity. Yet the comic version of Ms. Marvel is not the only one that needs to change; the MCU’s Ms. Marvel is also looking for that next evolution too.

Why Kamala’s New Villain is A Great MCU Fit
With season two of Ms. Marvel still in discussion at Marvel Studios, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel needs a new and interesting direction for the character to go, in order to satisfyingly continue her story, and Truthseeker is the answer. With the MCU’s Ms. Marvel so intertwined with family, a family member telling her that everything she is hurts her family and friends, even inadvertently, is exactly what she needs to push her over the edge. With the MCU also adapting Ms. Marvel’s mutant heritage, this is the perfect opportunity to send Truthseeker after her.
In Marvel Comics, Ms. Marvel has been gifted with a new beginning, and the MCU version of Kamala Khan should receive the same treatment when she returns to the screen.
If Kamala Khan’s family is further explored in the MCU, her cousin Bilal needs to be introduced, so he can become the perfect foil for Ms. Marvel. It would be even better if this happened after the MCU’s X-Men are introduced, so Kamala can really learn to embrace her mutant self. Kamala has already removed the mask from her costume in the Marvels, now she just needs to keep it off.
