The fourth installment of the Dragon Age series, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, sees the fate of Thedas hanging in the balance once again and this time it’s down to a new protagonist, Rook, to save the world. But just like in previous games, Rook isn’t going it alone and sets about recruiting a team of experts from all across the continent. Each has their own intriguing backstory and personal quest to aid them with unresolved issues in their past that are causing too many distractions.
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.]
Companions, their quests, and who are available for romance have always been a core part of the Dragon Age experience. There are seven companions for Rook to recruit and romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, with each companion coming from one of the six available factions, plus Harding for some Inquisition contacts. As the main quest progresses, companion quests will gradually unlock to continue their personal stories and evolve Rook’s relationship with them. However, some feel more impactful than others, while some struggle to work within the main plot.
7 Davrin – Grey Warden Warrior
Davrin’s Personal Quest Just Isn’t Very Personal
Davrin represents the Grey Wardens in The Veilguard and, when first met, comes across as a stoic and resourceful monster hunter. Originally assigned as the bodyguard to Wardens who were training the newly found griffons, Davrin is fiercely loyal to both the Grey Wardens and his new charges. When Rook goes to Davrin for help with the Blight, his personal quest will begin as all but one of the young griffons are taken by a mysterious creature known as the Gloom Howler. As the quest progresses, the creature’s true identity is revealed and the griffons are saved.
Those who enjoyed
Dragon Age: Last Flight
will be upset to see what has become of Isseya, especially as she is the opposite now of the person portrayed in the novel.
Davrin’s quest is a fascinating look at the Grey Wardens and doesn’t shy away from showing that the faction has often done terrible things in the name of saving Thedas. However, it’s a little disappointing not to learn more about Davrin himself, as his quest isn’t really about him, with it instead focusing on the griffons and Assan. The quest concludes with a choice between returning the griffons to the Wardens or letting them live in Arlathan Forest, which gives a fleeting moment connected to Davrin’s Dalish past. However, having his quest focus more on him would have been preferred.
6 Neve Gallus – Shadow Dragon Mage
Gritty Noir Case Is Refreshing
Neve Gallus is one of the first companions to join Rook and is introduced by Varric in The Veilguard‘s prologue. A talented but cynical detective, Neve’s quest can alter slightly based on whether Minrathous or Treviso was helped. Neve works closely with the Shadow Dragons in the Tevinter capital to help those in need, something that has seen her frequently at odds with the Venatori. Neve’s quest is an interesting one, putting Rook at the center of a fantastic noir-style case. As Neve vows to hunt down Aelia, Rook is given the opportunity to explore more of Minrathous’ seedy underbelly.
If Neve has been hardened, there can sometimes be a delay in gaining Hero of the Veilguard status. Completing a couple of quests and then traveling back to the Lighthouse should trigger dialogue with her to achieve it.
Neve’s personal quest is genuinely interesting, and the aspects involving the organized crime syndicate are brilliant, but it suffers from feeling a little too short and ends up feeling rushed. Despite Aelia being a murderous Venatori cultist Neve has crossed paths with before, Aelia isn’t linked to the main plot in any meaningful way. Similarly, there are hints found in notes that suggest a link between Aelia and Zara, who plays a role in Lucanis’ quest, but they are never expanded on. These problems make Neve’s quests feel disconnected from the main plot, despite Venatori involvement.
5 Emmrich Volkarin – Mourn Watch Mage
A Philosophical Exploration Of Mortality
Emmrich Volkarin is a scholar and a gentleman as well as a distinguished member of the Mourn Watch of Nevarra. As an expert in the Fade and spirits, Emmrich joins Rook to aid with research and Solas’ prison in particular, and along for the ride is a spirit of curiosity which has been given a skeletal body named Manfred. As he assists the team, strange events come to light that all point to an old friend, Johanna Hezenkoss, who was kicked out of the Mourn Watch and has taken their research too far.
As clues are followed, the fate of many souls rests on Emmrich’s expertise and his ability to overcome his lifelong fear of death. Ultimately, Emmrich’s journey is one of conquering his fear of mortality, and in the conclusion, he must choose between fulfilling a lifelong dream or saving Manfred. Emmrich’s quest links in wonderfully with his specialty, but just like Neve’s, feels too disconnected from the main plot at times, with Hezenkoss reduced to a minor boss fight rather than a genuine threat. This is a shame as Emmrich’s quest has some fantastic philosophical moments that aren’t satisfactorily explored.
4 Taash – Lords Of Fortune Warrior
Brilliant Look At Cultural & Generational Dynamics
The fierce Qunari Taash joins the team at the start of the second act after dragons attack Treviso and Minrathous. Taash’s quest is a deeply personal one, looking at the idea of identity and belonging. As a Qunari brought up in Rivain, Taash struggles to find their place in either culture and looks to Rook for advice in the early parts of the quest. As time goes on, Taash is able to reach a better understanding of not only themself, but also their mother. Eventually, a very bad guy finds out about Taash’s firebreathing, forcing a devastating confrontation in a volcano.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard – The Best Builds For Each Companion
Every companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard comes with their own set of skills to help Rook in combat. Here’s the best way to build each one.
Although the conclusion of Taash’s quest ends in the traditional video game style with a battle, the true fight Taash has been having is one of being split between two very different cultures. This is something many throughout the world can identify with, but The Veilguard goes a step further with the wonderful dynamic between Taash and their mother, Shathann. This complex relationship born of cultural and generational disconnect is beautifully realistic and heartbreaking. It would be easy to dismiss Taash as a brooding young person, but completing their quest truly shows the nuanced character they are.
3 Lucanis Dellamorte – Antivan Crows Rogue
Personal & Family Conflicts Clash
Lucanis Dellamorte joins Rook as the team’s expert assassin to help combat the Evanuris. As the grandson of the First Talon of the famed Anitivan Crows, Lucanis’ reputation speaks for itself, but there’s a small hitch when it is revealed very early on that he’s currently possessed by a demon, named Spite. Lucanis’ personal quest is just that, personal in every way, as he seeks to find out how he ended up in a Venatori prison with a demon inside him. Lucanis’ journey, just like Neve’s, will alter slightly based on the early decision between Minrathous and Treviso.

One Big Dragon Age: The Veilguard Decision Makes Little Sense & Feels Forced
Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t afraid to throw big decisions at the player but one early one feels unnatural and illogical within the world’s lore.
Lucanis’ companion quest starts out strong and maintains that throughout, suffering only slightly from the pacing issues that affect all the companion’s quests. There are various outcomes for Lucanis that depend on whether he was hardened or not, and what pieces of advice Rook gives him along the way regarding his relationship with Spite. The ‘twist’ that his cousin Illario was behind his betrayal is far too easy to guess, but that, luckily, doesn’t stop the emotional impact from being properly felt at the midpoint of his arc.
2 Bellara Lutare – Veil Jumper Mage
Links Nicely With Evanuris Plot Points
Bellara Lutare joins Rook as the group’s ancient elven artifacts expert and is first tasked with repairing the Lighthouse’s eluvian. Bellara is cheerful and often distracted by her work, which helps the more emotional beats of her story land, as she explains her dedication is due to her brother Cyrian’s death. Bellara strives for excellence out of a sense of guilt, completely flipping the ‘ditzy scientist’ trope on its head to create a beautifully nuanced character. Bellara’s quest also links wonderfully with the main plot as Anaris attempts to use the chaos of the other Evanuris to return to Thedas.
However, ultimately, Bellara’s personal quest suffers as the ending is too similar to Taash’s, with the death of a loved one. Although the twist of Cyrian being alive is brilliantly handled, his death lacks the same punch as Shathann’s, giving Bellara’s quest a disappointing ending. Bellara could have been a great opportunity to have another hardened companion in The Veilguard, but her quest’s conclusion makes up for this with the fate of an archive of dangerous knowledge placed in her hands which could shake up Dragon Age lore in future installments.
1 Lace Harding – Inquisition Rogue
Dwarf Lore Galore
Finally, there is Lace Harding, a returning character from Dragon Age: Inquisition who joins Rook right at the start of the game. Harding’s quest links into the main plot the best out of all the companions, with Solas’ pure lyrium dagger awakening a dormant power in her. During the journey to discover what this power means, Harding and Rook are able to travel to Kal Sharok, the fabled former capital of the dwarven empire long before it fell to the Darkspawn. However, something else has been awakened by Harding’s new powers which could spell disaster for her and the dwarves.
Harding’s quest delivers tons of new dwarf lore and completely turns everything long-time fans thought they knew on its head. Expanding what little was already known about the Titans with new knowledge, her questline pairs very well with the “Regrets of the Dread Wolf” side quest to paint a better picture of ancient Thedas. Harding’s quest links in with several other plot points throughout Dragon Age: The Veilguard, such as the original source of the Blight, and getting to explore Kal Sharok even briefly is a treat for any dwarven lore fans.
